This is a fascinating approach to religious perspectives of work, but I'm not entirely convinced that these examples represent causes of overwork. One that comes to mind that might fit the bill however is the Christian ethos of the "extra mile" (Matthew 5:41).

That said, I think you're definitely onto something. Even if the faith itself doesn't necessarily prescribe excess, foundational ideas like this tend to become extended.

Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback and comments. I completely agree with you. I also dont think religious beliefs cause overwork, but instead they inform/influence social norms and ideas about work - one example is the idea that idleness leads to sinfulness and is inherently harmful. This negative view of idleness exists in several faith traditions and carries forward in people's concepts of work, being inherently good (cannot harm) and idleness inherently (bad).
